Cell by Steven King

It is a normal day like any other. Clay Riddel was just made a comic book deal with a company and life has just started to look up. All of a sudden, people start going crazy. It starts off slow, but later has been renamed to "The Pulse." By listening to your cell phone, a message is transmitted into your brain and turns you into a zombie that does whatever you're told by transmission through radio. Every zombie is able to receive this signal when they are converted. Clay remembers about his son in Maine and tries desperately to connect with him, remembering that he had a cell phone as well. Clay meets a few others on his journey that haven't been transformed. The "Raggedy Man" toys with clay and forces him into what he wants him to do. The Raggedy Man is the spokesperson for the zombies, and they follow his every thought exactly as ordered.

What is Steven King trying to say by writing a book about cell phones and the technology to control people through them?

Maybe Steven King is showing how the increase in technology is causing people to become obsessed with it, and it is becoming a problem in society. Technology definately has its good points, but once we become too dependent on it, it can control our lives.

I agree, I think King is trying to get across how, over time, people have come to rely on technology a little too much. While technology has plenty of advantages, it also has its fair share of disadvantages. Also, I think technology gives us an excuse to be lazy. For example, instead of doing mental math, we just plug things into a calculator. Geniuses throughout time were able to do these things in their head without the help of technology, and maybe that's honestly what made them geniuses. Maybe that's why we haven't seen another Albert Einstein.

King is trying to show that while technology can be used to expedite things in society and better people's lifestyles, it can also be very detrimental. Nowadays, people rely so heavily on technology that it often overruns our lives. Most teenagers cannot go a day without texting or going on Facebook. Because of this immediate, easy access to everything around us, we tend to take things for granted. Also, technology is often absued such as in this case where it turns people into zombies. In this fictional novel, the zombies are being completely controlled by the technology, but is this fictional novel really any different than life today? Technology shapes our lives and virtually dicates the way we live.

King is trying to show how technology can become dangerous if we develop it to far. He is trying to symbolize how technology overruns or controls our lives today. He is trying to tell us to become less dependent on technology. Technology is good up to a certain point but we cant develop it to far. Their are things scientists are working on today that may have a negative effect on our future much like the cell phone in the story.

Stephen King is trying to show technology in a negative light. Yes, technology has made great advancements in the world today, but is it worth it? Technology is controlling our every move which is shown through the use of zombies and The "Raggedy Man." Stephen King is trying to show that the control tecnology has over people as a whole is extrememly negative rather than somewhat positive.
